If you’re experiencing problems like low FPS and High CPU usage even on decent i5+ CPUs (OSRS is not demanding on GPU) with OSRS on Linux, this post could help you with fix this problem. On my i5, 8GB RAM I had these problems constantly, I had like 10-20 FPS, big drops on GE and Fans spinning on Maximum all the time. Here is my solution that I think is going to help, specially on Low End laptops.

  • Don’t use GNOME 3. There is no fix other that switching to another Desktop Environment. On GNOME 3 I had like 10-20 FPS.

  • Switch to XFCE, KDE, LXDE, Mate = On All of these, I had stable 30+ FPS without any changes.

  • Disable Compositor = Compositor gives you Nice desktop effects, but it slows down performance of Windowed games. Here is how to do it on XFCE: https://imgur.com/gallery/4fx2O5h

  • Use GPU plugin = On integrated graphics card, it gives you +5 FPS, also sharper graphics and you can render more distance (+10 distance / no fps drop).

  • RuneLite: Disable Hardware Acceleration = It does not help FPS, but a lot of times games glitches with it on most Linux Desktops.
